The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a US federal agency. It's the same data insurance underwriters and dealer software use — we're just making it fast and readable.
Is it really free?
Yes. Every VIN check on this page and every safety recall lookup we show is powered by free federal APIs. We plan to add optional paid reports later (title history, accident records) — you can join the waitlist below.
What don't I get from this free check?
The NHTSA dataset doesn't include title/lien history, odometer records, or accident records. Those come from state DMVs and paid providers like Carfax. Our upcoming premium report will bundle them.
Can I use this for a car I'm about to buy?
